If you can't update AVG 8 and got this message, and use windows xp, download a script from here:
http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/error-invalid-update-control-ctf-file-when-updating-avg-anti-virus-80/
it will delete the ctf files , in the avg download folder.
or simply run these two commands in the command prompt:
cd C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\avg8\update\download\
del *.ctf
